Eclipse of Sun stops cricket test match in India in 1980

The only cricket match to have been interrupted by an eclipse of the Sun was the Jubilee test between India and England on February 16th, 1980.

A solar eclipse was due that afternoon, and the Indian board, in agreement with the English team, did not want the responsibility of a crowd of 50,000 damaging their eyes by looking at the Sun when the eclipse began. The test match continued the following morning.

England won the match by 10 wickets.

  1. I remember back then they showed a hindi movie on the national TV at the eclipse time so that most people would stay home to watch the movie and not venture out to see the eclipse!
