A little ramble through 19th century astronomy - Foundation stone laid on May 30th 1870 for observatory in Mauritius

The foundation stone of a new observatory was laid at Port Louis Mauritius on the 30^th of May 1870 by HRH the Duke of Edinburgh, to be called the Royal Alfred Observatory. In addition to astronomical observations, it is intended to make the observatory a centre for researches for the advancement of meteorology and terrestrial magnetism.
