A little ramble through 19th century astronomy - telescope lens in France in 1876

The council of the Paris Observatory has resolved to attempt the manufacture of object glasses by machinery instead of by hand. The mechanical cutting of flint and crown glass will be executed by M Lessautre, the well known clock maker, who prepares the optical part of the French lighthouses by machinery.
