The seventh asteroid to be discovered was called Iris and
was found by the English astronomer John Russell Hind from an observatory in
Regent’s Park, London on August 13th 1847. It was Hind’s first of
his ten asteroid discoveries.

Iris was named after the rainbow goddess Iris in Greek
mythology.
