Eclipse of the Sun in 1887 seen from a balloon above Russia

 The Russian chemist Dmitri Ivanovich Mendeleef (1834-1907) travelled on August 19^th 1887 in a balloon to a height of 11,500 feet to get above the cloud limit to observe an eclipse of the Sun in Russia.
