Ariel 1
The first
British satellite, Ariel 1 was launched on April 26th 1962. It was designed to study radiation from the
Sun.
Ariel 1 was among several
satellites accidentally damaged or destroyed by the U S Starfish Prime high-altitude
nuclear test on July 9, 1962. Ariel 1 re entered the Earth’s atmosphere and burnt
up on 24 April 1976.
